Clinic with Olympian Debbie McDonald, Riding Performances, and Gala Make Exciting Benefit for Three Gaits on October 14–15

On October 14 and 15, the Madison Area Recreational Equestrian Sisters (MARES) will host MoonDance 2006, a special benefit event for Three Gaits, which will be held in the lovely setting at Bristol Equestrian Estates, 7039 Highway N, in Sun Prairie.

Olympic and Dressage World Cup Champion Debbie McDonald will conduct a two-day dressage clinic, and the highlight of the weekend will be a Saturday evening gala beginning at 6 P.M.

MoonDance 2006 LogoDuring the clinic, McDonald will work with eight riders and their horses and will help them to learn how to progress "up the levels" of the dressage discipline. Clinic riders range from those working at Training Level (the most basic) to those who are at the highest level of competitive dressage, Grand Prix. Clinic riders have been selected but auditors can observe and learn how to execute everything from simple warm-up exercises to the most challenging collected movements.

The gala will be catered by Blue Plate Catering and will feature hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, wine, silent auction, raffle, vendor booths, and 90 minutes of choreographed musical dances on horseback performed by nationally ranked horses and riders.

Ms. McDonald will be available to sign autographs at the Nutrena booth on Saturday evening and will then be the guest of honor at the gala. As a special treat, several riders from the Three Gaits program will also be attending, and they will remind us all why the success of this event is so important.

Some of the items in the silent auction include:

  • A vacation week in New Mexico at a 4,000 square-foot home overlooking the Sandier Mountains
  • An IPOD NANO 2G and Shuffle
  • A pair of MDC Intelligent Stirrups
  • A horse-drawn family hay ride
  • Gourmet dining gift certificates
  • A breeding to award-winning German Sport Pony stallion Makuba
  • Horse-and-rider training packages in several disciplines
  • Spa packages, both human and horse
  • Animal care baskets for your canine and feline friends
  • $1,000 home renovation certificate

Tickets for the gala on Saturday, October 14, are $50 per person. Tickets are available to audit the clinic for $30 for one day (either Saturday or Sunday) or $50 for both days.

To order tickets, use the reservation form enclosed in this newsletter, or visit www.moondance2006.org. The MARES club consists of local women equestrian who not only meet monthly for educational and networking opportunities, but also present a biannual benefit for their favorite cause—Three Gaits Therapeutic Horsemanship Center. For more information on MARES, visit www.maresclub.com. Proceeds from MoonDance 2006 will directly benefit Three Gaits riders and therapeutic horsemanship program.

Another Busy Summer with Day Camps

Once again, Three Gaits had a busy schedule in this summer with regular lessons, horse shows, and a full schedule of day camps. Lead by instructor Angela Frank, weekly sessions were held during the months of June and July.

The summer began with a Youngins/Beginners Riding Camp hosted from June 19 to 23. Participants ranged in age from 6 to 10 and focused on lessons that allowed riders to become more independent. They also assisted in daily horse chores, played games and did craft projects.

A two-week Intermediate Riding camp was held July 10 to 21. Riders worked on refining their independent riding skills and were introduced to different disciplines. Unmounted activities focused on horse ownership and advanced horse care. With the warm weather we experienced, the campers enjoyed doing horse baths!

Two sessions of Youth Volunteer Day Camp were offered to allow youth ages 9 to 13 a opportunity to volunteer at Three Gaits. The goal of this camp is to promote volunteerism at a young age, and prepare campers with the horsemanship skills needed to volunteer in the regular therapeutic riding program, once they reach the required age of 14. Mornings were dedicated to completing a list of tasks to maintain the grounds and barn, and afternoons were spent doing unmounted horsemanship activities like leading, grooming, and tacking.

All campers worked hard, learned a lot, and had fun in the process.
